20% Project-12/14/12

Today I learned that there are different reasons people are homeless. For example mental illnesses make people become homeless. 16% of single people that are homeless have a mental illness. I also learned that a definition of being homeless is a person being "doubled up". That means that the person moves from a friends house or to an extended family every so often.

20% project

I am interested in helping the people around me that don't necessarily have as many resources as me. Erika and I want to do something to help homeless people in Allegan and Ottawa counties. I want to help people locally so I can possibly see the effects our impact make. We can't always see if what we do globally helps or not that's why we are going to do something in West Michigan. We have learned that in order to get fundings from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) the county has to have an unemployment rate of at least 10.7%. Allegan and Ottawa counties are at about 10% unemployment so they don't get the fundings. Therefore they are having most of there funds coming from people like us. There is a waiting list of over 2000 people waiting to access units in Ottawa’s Housing Plus network of agencies. Many of these people have mental health issues; some are living with HIV/AIDS. At this point we are still thinking about what we are going to do. Maybe something to do with the Holland Rescue Mission or another local shelter.

Likes and Dislikes of 7th Grade Science

This year in science was a little tough for me. I didn't like how the teachers didn't give you lectures and ask you to take notes. I also didn't like the roadmaps we did. I like to have a little direction on where I need to go. I also would like to have more due dates. Like on the road maps I think we should have due dates for every box. Another thing I didn't like was all the independent work time. I think sometime we should have like all class projects or something that we don't have to be independent on. I also think that our teachers should give us little for warning on when our test are going to be and some notes we can actually study. I think we should have at least two nights to study if not three. The things I did like was a not a strict working environment. For example we could talk if we weren't to loud and we could work by our friends for the most part. I also liked that we got to pick our seating chart. Over all the year was fun but it could've been better.

Reflection on our Chemistry Unit

The past couple of weeks have been fun. I have liked this unit the most over the whole school year. The thing I liked the most was making the iMovie and the chemistry magic show. I liked the iMovie because I could work with my friends and get to kind of goof off. We got our work done but it was fun on the way to our finished product. The magic show was cool because we got to see how different chemicals reacted to heat and each other. Overall I liked this past unit.

Evolution of the Dog

1. DNA analysis published in 1997 suggests a date of about 130,000 years ago for the transformation of wolves to dogs.
2. Modern dogs are decedents of the wolves.
3. Modern dogs have shorter muzzles and smaller teeth than their decendents the wolves.

Carboniferous Jornal Entry

Today I decided to take a trip to the carboniferous time period through my time machine. It didn't go to well. First I forgot my bug spray. Usually that wouldn't be a problem but the bugs in the carboniferous time period are massive. I mean like the dragonflies are 3 feet long. You wouldn't want to get bit by one of those, you would be a gonner. Next I went scuba diving. I almost lost my way trying to get here because the forests are so thick with trees. I saw some trilobites and prehistoric sharks scuba diving. It was awesome. Lastly I alsmost died of dehydration. It felt like 102 degrees out. It was so humid. As you can see it didn't go to well. I don't think the carboniferous time period should be on anyone's bucket list because of the bugs and temperature. I will not miss that place.

Rock Story

I am a rock named Henrietta, and this is the story of my life. Many years ago, I started as an igneous intrusive rock. I sure did get hot in that volcano in Hawaii. I was changing so fast I don’t really remember this part but I will try. I think I was just about the size of a softball, I was really smooth, and I think I was a really dark black or something like that. I also think I had few to no crystals, and I cooled extremely fast.
Then one day I changed into a sedimentary rock. Pop!! Out of a volcano I come and into a lake I go. I, Henrietta the rock, have an irregular shape. Weathering and erosion are very cruel to me. They made me look the way I do. Rain and wind are also very mean because they caused me to breakdown into smaller pieces of rock. Now all of the other rocks are being bullies pushing and shoving me left and right. Because of all the pushing and shoving I am about the size of a golf ball. I also have fossils stuck in me. Now the nice cool water is carrying me to the edge of the shore where I will turn into a metamorphic rock.
Ahhhhh!!! I’m getting covered by sand and going into extreme heat and pressure. Help!!! I can’t breathe. I am now a metamorphic rock. It is very different being a metamorphic rock because I am a combination of different rocks. I am no longer a pure igneous rock but I have a little sedimentary rock inside me too. I am now about the size of a quarter and am a little rougher.
As for right now I will wait for someone to come and skip me down the river or use me in their slingshot.
